The Workshop -

Registration is now open for Workshop July 25-30, 2021 - all online!

The era of the pandemic has taught us to be flexible!  In 2021, we are offering two separate tracks for participants in our online Workshop.

Full Registration: Cellists enrolling as full participants will be among a close coterie of like-minded adults who will share interactive lessons with four master cellists, presentations, lectures, masterclasses as well as online social activities and a closing concert. The sessions will be recorded and will be available for re-viewing for 30 days following the Workshop.  Registration includes a 2021 Workshop T-shirt.

Auditing: Auditors will be able view the sessions in real time and will be able to view recordings for 30 days following the Workshop. No interaction with the faculty or other cellists will be available.

Why study J.S. Bach’s six cello suites?  The Six Suites for Unaccompmanied Cello are the quintessential works for the instrument.
Bach Cello Suites Workshop offers you, the passionate adult amateur cellist, a unique opportunity to delve deeply into this iconic music. Workshop participants will work closely with Artistic Director Matt Haimovitz and the Workshop’s faculty of exceptional teaching cellists Phoebe Carrai, Elinor Frey and Jennifer Morsches. You will enjoy (virtually) the company of like-minded musicians all drawn together by a deep mutual love of Bach and the cello. The Workshop is an exceptional opportunity to enhance your musicianship and deepen your understanding and appreciation of the Bach Cello Suites.

This workshop is designed with you, the adult amateur cellist, in mind. Perhaps you play in a community orchestra or an ensemble. You might be a music teacher. You may be returning to the cello after years or even decades away from playing. Or you may be a steadily improving late-starter.  You may be working solo or with a teacher.

Whatever your situation, you may be at that point in your musical journey where you are seeking a meaningful and exciting way to engage intensively with the Bach Cello Suites. If so, Bach Cello Suites Workshop can help you “build your better Bach.” Music is a lifelong pursuit and joy. Stretching your musical boundaries, at all stages of life, sharpens the mind, excites the ears, and quickens the heart. So join us at Bach Cello Suites Workshop for a glorious week of expanding musical horizons.

Space is limited for full participation in the Workshop. We aim to keep the ratio of cellists to faculty low to maintain the personal nature of the Workshop that our participants cherish.

Please note: Why is this Workshop for people over 30 years of age?  If you are a talented high school cellist bound for conservatory, or already a conservatory student aiming toward a career as a professional musician, this Workshop will not meet your needs.  There are many excellent camps and workshops tailored specifically for high school, college and conservatory students.  This Workshop is designed for adult amateur cellists who are seeking to enrich their musical lives beyond the bounds of formal educational institutions.

But wait!  This year due to the fact that the Workshop is online, younger people have the option of viewing the lessons online via our auditing option if they wish.

Features of the Workshop include:

  • Individual attention and small group lessons
  • Masterclasses
  • Instruction in small ability-matched ensembles
